Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral

The Historic Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral was the original ending place of the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade until 1830. It was also the original burial place of Lorenzo da Ponte, Mozart’s librettist (he was later moved to Calvary Cemetery). Other famous people interred in the catacombs are the first resident Bishop of New York John Connolly, General Thomas Eckert, several members of the Delmonico restaurant family, Countess Annie Leary and Congressman John Kelly. In addition two New Yorkers who are currently on the road to Sainthood Pierre Toussaint and Father Isaac Heckler were originally interred here before being moved to the new St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

In more recent years it was the film shooting location for the baptism scene from The Godfather.
