New York Festival of Song Presents
Manning the Canon
June 25 7:30pm
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, New York Festival of Song and Five Boroughs Music Festival revive this beloved program, which Anthony Tommasini of The New York Times called an “insightful and imaginative, touching and funny” tribute to gay composers and gay lives. From Schubert’s “Der Gondelfahrer” (set to a text by his roommate and probable paramour, Johann Mayrhofer) to John Wallowitch’s hilarious cabaret song “Bruce,” MANNING THE CANON is a vital and engaging musical portrait of life, love, and loss in the world of gay men over two centuries. Featuring tenors Daniel McGrew and Scott Murphree, baritone Efraín Solís, and bass Matt Boehler alongside pianist and host Steven Blier.
All NYFOS programming is funded, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature; and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
