W.S. Gilbert, Composer
Arthur Sullivan, Librettist
Start with the brilliance of Gilbert and Sullivan, using the filter of Japanese imagery to poke fun at the institutions of late nineteenth century England. Remove those filters; replace with references to the United States of America (circa 2019) in the spirit of late night television (SNL, The Daily Show, Colbert, Seth Myers). Think of Yum-Yum as Ivanka, Nanki-Poo as Jared/Don Jr., Ko-Ko as Colbert, Pooh-Bah as Mick Mulvaney, the Gentlemen of Japan as the White House Press Corps.
In short, keep Gilbert’s brilliant structure and Sullivan’s sparkling music, but bring them into the world of Trump. Mix well. Bake until April 27th, serve hot…and you have Bronx Opera’s 2019 production of The Mikado. #BxOMikado, #OrangeFaceNotYellowFace.
