Malvina di Scozia

by Giovanni Pacini

Conducted by Hans Schellevis
Directed by Judith Barnes
Featuring Doug Han, piano; Angela Leson as Malvina; and Karolina Pilou as Morna.

Giovanni Pacini was one of the most popular Italian opera composers of the first half of the 19th century, with more than 80 operas to his name. His opera Malvina di Scozia, based on a notorious royal scandal, was beset by obstacles at its 1851 Naples premiere, including official censorship, a mortally ill librettist, and the resignation of the lead tenor. Despite these challenges, Pacini created an opera so beautiful that a throng of admirers escorted the veteran composer home by torchlight after the first performance. But Pacini’s star was on the wane, and Malvina di Scozia vanished from the repertoire. It has not been heard in over 150 years. Vertical Player Repertory, in collaboration with Thea Cook of the Donizetti society, has commissioned music editor and conductor Hans Schellevis to create a new performing edition, offering New York audiences a first chance to hear this intriguing, long-lost opera, brought back to life by an exciting international cast.
